The Great Buy New Zealand Hams Campaign is a grassroots initiative founded by Waikato dairy farmer and rural advocate Walt Cavendish, dedicated to ensuring Kiwi families can enjoy Christmas hams that are 100% New Zealand–farmed.
Every year, thousands of tonnes of imported pork is turned into hams and smallgoods in New Zealand, often from pigs kept in cages or stalls that are banned under our own animal-welfare laws. That’s not fair on our farmers, and it’s not fair on consumers who assume they’re buying local.
This campaign is created to shine a light on the issue, celebrate the butchers and brands doing it right, and help shoppers find real New Zealand hams proudly born and raised under our standards, our care, and our laws.

Animal Policy International (API) has shown that more than 83% of New Zealanders believe imported animal products should meet the same welfare standards as those required here. It’s a simple principle — fairness, not loopholes.
